Llandudno has been a family holiday favourite since Victorian times, and it’s easy to see why. Two beaches, a traditional pier, a mountain you can ride a tram up, and everything within walking distance – it’s the kind of place where kids are happy and parents can actually relax. Here are our favourite family days out, from Sarah and Dougy at Llandudno Central.
Beaches and the prom
North Shore is the classic seaside beach: a long sweep of sand and shingle with the pier at one end, perfect for sandcastles, paddling and rock-pooling at low tide. The wide promenade is ideal for scooters and pushchairs, and there’s always an ice cream stop nearby.
West Shore is the quieter side of town, with soft sand, dunes and wide views across the Conwy estuary. It’s our pick for a family picnic and an evening walk to catch the sunset over Anglesey.
Up the Great Orme
A trip up the Great Orme is a must. Ride the Victorian Great Orme Tramway – the UK’s only cable-hauled street tramway – or take the cable car from Happy Valley, then look out for the famous Kashmiri goats on the way back down. Underground, the Great Orme Copper Mines let you walk through Bronze Age tunnels dug around 4,000 years ago, which older kids love. Both the tram and the mines are seasonal, so check opening times before you go.
The pier and Happy Valley
Llandudno Pier is one of the longest in Wales, with arcades, rides, sweets and fish and chips. Next door, Happy Valley gardens are great for a run around, and the Llandudno Ski and Snowboard Centre above them has a toboggan run that’s a hit with all ages.
When it rains
Llandudno has plenty for a wet day. Try the chocolate experience in town, where you follow chocolate’s 5,000-year story, an escape room at Ultimate Escape, or a show at Venue Cymru on the promenade. The Mostyn gallery on Vaughan Street is free to visit and often runs family activities.
Easy days out
Within half an hour you’ll find Conwy Castle (walking the town walls is a favourite with kids), the Welsh Mountain Zoo in Colwyn Bay, and the forests and waterfalls of Eryri (Snowdonia) around Betws-y-Coed. For more ideas, see our complete guide to things to do in Llandudno.
